Smoky Savory Fry Seasoning

Every great batch of fries deserves an amazing seasoning, and this Smoky Savory Fry Seasoning is exactly what you’ve been missing. If you’ve ever wondered how to create that irresistible seasoning from your favorite burger joints (think Five Guys, Shake Shack, or Red Robin), this is the one. Trust me, once you try this blend on your fries, you’ll never go back to plain salt again.

I’ve been making fries at home for years, and this blend hits all the right notes. It’s smoky from the paprika, savory from the garlic and onion, with just enough heat to keep things interesting. The best part is it takes literally 5 minutes to make and uses ingredients you probably already have in your pantry.

This isn’t just any ordinary seasoning salt. This blend is specifically crafted to complement the crispy, golden goodness of perfectly cooked fries while adding layers of flavor that will have everyone asking for more.

Ingredients for the Best Fry Seasoning

The beauty of this seasoning lies in the balance of flavors and the quality of ingredients. Let me break down why each one makes this seasoning absolutely irresistible:

  • Fine sea salt acts as the base that makes everything else pop. And come on, fries and salt are made for one another.
  • Smoked paprika is the secret weapon to provide that gorgeous red color and campfire flavor.
  • Black pepper adds just the right amount of bite without being too spicy. )Don’t worry, spice lovers, I’ve got you covered, too.
  • Onion and garlic powder form a classic duo that creates that savory, “can’t-stop-eating” flavor.)
  • Ground mustard powder adds a bright, tangy depth of flavor you might not know you want, but trust me, you do.
  • Cayenne pepper brings just the slightest kick of heat. This one is optional, but it will set your fries apart from the pack. (If you want an even spicier version of fries, check out my Homemade Cajun Seasoning recipe.)

How to Use Fry Seasoning

Using this fry seasoning is incredibly simple, but timing is everything! For the best results, season your fries immediately after they finish cooking while they’re still hot and slightly oily. This helps the seasoning stick perfectly so every bite is full of flavor. Here’s my foolproof method:

  1. Fry. Cook your fries until golden and crispy.
  2. Season. While still hot, sprinkle the seasoning generously over the fries.
  3. Toss. Give those bad boys a gentle toss to ensure even coverage.
  4. Devour. Serve immediately for maximum flavor impact.

Beyond French Fries

While this seasoning was created with fries in mind, it’s incredibly versatile! I’ve used this blend on so many different foods, and it never disappoints. Here are some of my favorite ways to use this amazing seasoning:

Two raw potatoes, a julienned potato, a jar of tallow, and a bowl of spice rub on a black countertop.

Making and Storing Your Fry Seasoning

This fry seasoning couldn’t be easier to make. Simply combine all the ingredients in a small bowl and whisk together until evenly mixed. I always recommend making a double or triple batch because this stuff goes fast!

Storing Your Seasoning

Store your homemade fry seasoning in an airtight container. I love using these glass spice jars because they keep everything fresh and look great in your spice cabinet. This seasoning will stay fresh for 1-2 months when stored properly in a cool, dry place.

Make Ahead of Time

I always recommend having a batch of this seasoning ready to go. There’s nothing worse than having perfect fries ready and realizing you’re out of seasoning. Make a batch ahead of time so you’re always prepared when those fry cravings strike.

Susie’s Fry Seasoning Pro Tips

Check out these top tips so you can get the most out of your fry seasoning:

  • Use immediately. Season fries while they’re hot for the best adhesion
  • Don’t over-salt. Remember, this blend already contains salt, so taste as you go.
  • Double the batch. This seasoning is so good, you’ll use it on everything. I’d make extra.
  • Adjust the heat. Feel free to increase or decrease the cayenne to your preference. Just go slow so you don’t get too spicy.

Instructions

  • Make the fry seasoning. Combine the sea salt, smoked paprika, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, mustard powder, and cayenne in a small bowl, then mix until you have an even mixture. I recommend using a whisk or fork so you can break up any clumps.
2 teaspoons fine sea salt, 1 teaspoon smoked paprika, 1 teaspoon black pepper, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon ground mustard powder, ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Use or store for later. Use your seasoning right away on French fries, potato wedges, or veggies, or store in a seasoning jar and store in a dry place.
