Classic Poultry Seasoning

Ditch the store-bought stuff and kick your BBQ birds up a notch with this 8-ingredient Poultry Seasoning. Sage and rosemary bring that irresistible aroma, while marjoram adds a touch of sweetness. Fresh parsley brightens everything up, and the two-pepper combo creates a subtle heat even sensitive eaters will love. One shake of this seasoning on your chicken or turkey, and you’ll have the neighbors following their noses to your backyard!

Ingredients for Poultry Seasoning

With just 8 easy ingredients you can make this savory, sweet, herby blend in just a few minutes. You likely have most of what you need on hand, but just in case, here’s a list of what you want to have ready:

  • 1 Tablespoon dried parsley
  • 2 teaspoons Kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons dry rubbed sage
  • 1 teaspoon crushed rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon dried marjoram
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground white pepper
8 piles of spices including salt, rosemary, and marjoram, forming the points of 2 separate diamonds.

How to Make Poultry Seasoning

Once you’ve gathered the ingredients, you’re just a few simple steps away from your new favorite seasoning:

  1. Make the seasoning. First, add the dried parsley, dry rubbed sage, crushed rosemary, marjoram, and the rest of your seasoning ingredients in a small bowl. Give everything a good stirring with a whisk or fork until you have a nice, even blend. This also ensures you break up any potential clumps so you get a smooth application when using your seasoning.
  2. Use the seasoning or store for later. Your homemade Poultry Seasoning is ready to use right away on chicken, turkey, stuffing, vegetables, or anything else that needs a savory, herby touch. You can store any unused seasoning in an airtight container to store in your pantry for when those cravings start clucking.

Store-bought seasoning is typically very finely-ground. If you want a fine blend, you can grind this seasoning using a mortar and pestle or spice grinder. I like a little more texture, and I love the visual of the individual herbs speckled on a perfectly-grilled whole chicken. The beauty of making your own seasoning is you can make it however you like best!

Storage and Shelf Life

Your Poultry Seasoning stores easily so you have it on hand whenever you need a boost of herby goodness. Store any unused seasoning in a dry place. I love these glass spice jars for my spice blends, but any airtight container will do. Your seasoning will maintain a robust flavor up to 6 months. After that, you’ll want to whip up a fresh mix.

Susie’s Seasoning Pro Tips

If you do nothing more than make this seasoning to give your favorite poultry a blast of savory flavor, you’ll be satisfied. However, if you want to really get the most out of this seasoning when feeding the people you love, here are some tips to help:

  • Double up! Between the deep, herby flavor of this spice blend and how big some birds can be, your stash won’t last long. If you want to have some on hand, I recommend making a double or triple batch. You can adjust right in the recipe card so you don’t have to guess!
  • Double down! Because this homemade seasoning isn’t ground, you’ll want to use about twice as much when substituting it for the finely ground, store-bought version. Trust me, the texture is worth it.
  • Customize. The best part about making your own seasonings at home is the ability to change things for your personal tastes. If your family isn’t big on parsley, swap it out for some ground thyme leaves or oregano. Add some cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes if you want a little heat, or some lemon peel for zest. Use this baseline to build a seasoning blend your family will love.

    Quick question!
Onion Powder is listed twice? I believe that this should be listed only once. Prove me wrong!
