I’ve tested both wired and wireless meat thermometers and have found that wireless models are some of the best out there. While some may come with caveats (some require an associated app or booster, and the tech can be hit-or-miss sometimes), I’ve selected three of the best wireless meat thermometers, including my all-time favorite from ThermoWorks.

Check them out (along with some of my pro BBQ tips) below, as well as some pointers on what to avoid when it comes to wireless thermometers.

  2. Runner Up: ChefsTemp Finaltouch X10 – $69.99 at Amazon

Reviews of The Best Wireless Meat Thermometers

1. My Favorite: Thermoworks Thermapen One

Thermoworks Thermapen One

I’ve been using ThermoWorks products for more than 10 years, and the Thermapen One is the meat thermometer I always have on standby. If you want to learn even more about some the major pros like its accuracy and speed, then check out my in-depth review. This means you can get a quick temp read and close the grill lid or oven door quickly, helping you to avoid letting any of that precious heat escape.

I also love the fold-away design for safe storage, so you won’t have to worry about accidentally damaging the probe (or jabbing yourself) when rummaging through your kitchen drawer.

I love this meat thermometer so much that I worked with ThermoWorks to co-brand a thermometer and lemon-pepper spice bundle ($129) with our logo! Some of my favorite recipes for this citrusy rub include my grilled lemon pepper chicken and grilled catfish.

ChefsTemp Finaltouch X10

When I tested and reviewed the Finaltouch X10, I found it to be a well-built thermometer that boasts accurate read times and an easy-to-read backlit display. Although it’s not quite as fast as the Thermapen One, it can still take temperature readings within 2 to 3 seconds, plus it’s a bit more affordable than my top pick. In reality, it’s a great option if you’re not quite ready to invest in a pricier model, or you’re just starting out in the grilling game.

3. Best on a Budget: ThermoWorks ThermoPop 2

ThermoWorks ThermoPop 2

If you’re looking for something affordable and reliable, then this is the best wireless meat thermometer on a budget. The ThermoPop 2 comes with 4.5-inch and 8-inch probe lengths with the longer length being perfect for hot liquids (think deep frying or high grill heats).

It’s a little different since you use a power button on the back instead of just flipping the probe open to turn it on, but it still boasts a handy automatic shut-off feature. In my review, I noted that I was especially thrilled with the waterproof rating, which means this model can survive a bit of rainy weather.

The Specs:

  • Channels: 1
  • Display: Backlit, current temp only
  • Water resistance: IP67

Other Wireless Meat Thermometers I’ve Tested & Researched

FireBoard Spark

I’ve used and reviewed the FireBoard Spark, and it’s a serious contender thanks to its wide list of features. It’s not quite as fast, clocking temperature reads in 3-4 seconds, but it’s still speedy and has a great display screen. You can use it as an instant-read thermometer or use the external probe port and connect the device to the FireBoard app to monitor long-term cooking sessions. The external probe isn’t included, so it’s an added expense for an already pricey meat thermometer. The FireBoard Spark is available at FireBoard for $149.

Meater Block

This meat thermometer is where we start seeing wireless technology that doesn’t hit the mark in terms of connectivity, which is what I experienced during testing. This model features a bamboo block designed to house and charge four probes. It also has a built-in digital command center and connects to an r app for detailed data output about cooking. However, I found that the readers weren’t super accurate, and I struggled with connecting to the app every few minutes. For the high price tag, I’d expect it to be way more reliable. The Meater Block is available at Amazon for $299.95.

NutriChef WiFi Wireless BBQ Digital Thermometer

I’ve researched this digital wireless meat thermometer because it’s moderately priced and popular on Amazon, plus users report that it’s durable and easy to use. It comes with two wireless probes with room for up to five and an ambient probe that’s perfect for smoking. The WiFi connectivity to an app means you should be able to insert the probe(s) and walk away to do other meal prep while the food cooks, but opinions are mixed on the range and reliability of the WiFi connection. I prefer to stick with the handheld instant-read options. The NutriChef WiFi Wireless BBQ Digital Thermometer is available at Amazon for $72.92.

Hi! I’m Susie, the founder of Hey Grill Hey. When I started this blog in 2015, my goal was to help people grill better, whether it be brisket, burgers, or ribs. Today, my husband Todd and I run HGH as a family business for our signature BBQ rubs, sauces, and gadgets. We also created The Grill Squad, where we offer a series of online pitmaster classes to increase your BBQ knowledge and skills.

To create my list of the best wireless meat thermometers, I looked at models that I’ve tested in the past. I considered important factors like display, durability, and budget, ensuring that I was only recommending options that I would reach for in my own kitchen.

What to Know About Wireless Meat Thermometers

Things to Consider When Choosing a Wireless Meat Thermometer

  1. Wireless range: Instant-read thermometers don’t rely on range because they feature a built-in digital display. When using a fully wireless probe connected to an app via WiFi or Bluetooth, the wireless range lets you know how far away you are from the probe before your connectivity is affected. The shorter the distance, the closer you need to stay to your grill.
  2. Display: The inside of a grill, smoker, or oven can be dark. If you’re using an instant-read thermometer, pick one with a backlit display with large numbers so it’s easy to read, remove the probe, and close the grill back up. Those probes that work with wireless apps rely on your phone, so make sure it’s charged up or have your charger handy!
  3. Water resistance: Grilling and cooking can result in bubbling and splashing. A good meat thermometer should be resistant to liquids and grime, preventing them from working through the housing into where the electronics sit. Wash your hand-held instant-read thermometers by hand. No need to soak them — just give them a gentle scrub with a soft sponge, then allow to dry.
  4. Power: If you’re planning on long, slow cooks like roasting and smoking, an instant-read thermometer might not be your best choice because it requires opening the lid which lets much-needed heat escape. A hands-free wireless thermometer is a great option in this case, but you’ll want something with a reliable power source to make sure the thermometer doesn’t die before cooking is complete.
  5. Use: A hand-held instant meat thermometer is a super-versatile tool for more than just grilling. They’re also great for oven roasting, deep frying, homebrewing, baking, candy, tempering chocolate, and more. If you’re looking to smoke meats, then look for a wireless thermometer where the probe can be left in the smoker.

What Is a Wireless Meat Thermometer?

A wireless meat thermometer is a versatile kitchen tool that allows you to monitor the internal temperature of your food. Some may also monitor the ambient temperature of the grill or pit at the same time. It’s the best way to ensure your food cooks to temperature for safe consumption.

Some wireless meat thermometers are instant-read, which means you stick the probe in to spot-check the internal temp of the meat. Others are designed to stay in the meat and transmit real-time data to a console or mobile app throughout the cook.

Although these app-compatible thermometers offer a level of convenience that’s pretty enticing, in my opinion, most of them are still in their first generation, and since the tech is pretty new and they tend to be pretty inaccurate. As a result, they’re focused more on the tech interfaces and software than having accurate temperature readings. I would avoid these types for now until technology improves and stick with handheld, instant-read probe thermometers.

Are Wireless Meat Thermometers Worth it?

Absolutely, if you’re looking to get real-time data , a wireless thermometer is a great choice because it declutters the cooking process (no wires hanging out of your grill, smoker, or oven). It’s also the easiest way to know when food is perfectly done rather than judging by eye and hoping it’s not under- or overcooked.

Are Wireless Meat Thermometers Accurate?

Wireless meat thermometers provide accurate, real-time data about the temperature of what you’re cooking. They can also help you estimate the time it will be done. However, be sure to read other users’ reviews — many people using app-based wireless thermometers have reported accuracy issues.

How to Use a Wireless Meat Thermometer

Using a wireless meat thermometer is really easy. If you’re using an instant-read thermometer, then simply insert the probe into the thickest portion of meat, avoiding the fat. If you’re using an app-based thermometer, then insert the probe into the thickest portion of the meat and make sure the app is on and the probe is activated and ready to work.

Can I Leave a Wireless Meat Thermometer on the Grill?

Yes, meat thermometers with wireless connectivity to an app are designed to be left on the grill, however, instant-read thermometers should be removed to prevent the plastic and electronics from melting.
