Best BBQ Baked Beans

These sweet and savory BBQ Baked Beans are a Hey Grill Hey take on a classic BBQ side dish. Loaded with flavor and melt-in-your-mouth beans, this recipe is one you’ll be sending to everybody after the potluck is over.
BBQ Baked Beans
For the most perfect, flavorful BBQ side around, you MUST make these BBQ baked beans. And while I know that comes across as aggressive, I’m owning it, because these beans are beyond amazing, and I desperately want you to try them.
They’re an awesome combination of sweet, salty, savory, and spicy, making them great baked beans to compliment any main dish. Serve these alongside beef, chicken, or pork for a filling meal.
Ingredients for BBQ Baked Beans
Now, there’s a decent amount of ingredients you’ll need for these beans, but I promise they are all important and all contribute to the amazingness of these baked beans. Here’s what you need to make this recipe:
- 1 pound bacon
- 1 diced yellow onion
- 2 diced jalapenos
- 4 cloves minced garlic
- 4 can great northern beans
- 1 can black beans
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup Hey Grill Hey Texas Style BBQ Sauce
- 1 cup brown soda (I prefer Dr. Pepper, but Coke or Root Beer also work)
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 Tablespoons molasses
- 2 Tablespoons dijon mustard
- 2 Tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 Tablespoon salt
- 2 teaspoons black pepper

How to Make BBQ Baked Beans
Even though there are quite a few ingredients in these BBQ baked beans, the process of making them is actually quite simple.
- Preheat. Fire up your smoker or oven and preheat to 275 degrees F. Next, preheat a 12-inch cast iron skillet over medium-high heat.
- Cook the bacon and veggies. Add diced bacon to the skillet and cook until very soft. Drain most of the grease before adding onions, jalapenos, and garlic. Cook until the veggies are soft.
- Finish making the beans. Add all remaining ingredients to the skillet and stir well.
- Bake the beans. Place the skillet into the smoker or the oven and cook for 1 hour. The beans will soften and the sauce will thicken while it cooks.
- Enjoy. Remove the BBQ baked beans from the heat and allow them to cool slightly before serving them alongside your favorite entrees.
Tips for Making Baked Beans
These baked beans are pretty self-explanatory and difficult to mess up too badly. But just in case you need a little extra help, check out a couple of tips for making this recipe below.
- Have fun with your beans! I like great northern beans and black beans as my mix of choice for color and flavor, but you can swap them around. Navy beans, pinto beans, kidney beans, or cannellini beans all work great!
- Cook these however you please. These beans work great in your oven or on your smoker. I prefer the slow, smoky heat of a wood fire, but I know those ovens can be super convenient! Cook these however works best for you.

BBQ Baked Beans
Ingredients
- 1 pound bacon diced
- 1 medium yellow onion diced
- 2 jalapenos seeded and diced, can use 1 green pepper instead
- 4 cloves garlic minced
- 4 cans great northern beans drained and rinsed
- 1 can black beans drained and rinsed
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup Hey Grill Hey Texas Style BBQ Sauce or your favorite BBQ sauce
- 1 cup brown soda Dr. Pepper is best, but root beer and cola also work
- ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 Tablespoons molasses
- 2 Tablespoons Dijon mustard
- 2 Tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 Tablespoon salt
- 2 teaspoons black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat. Preheat your smoker or oven to 275 degrees F.
- Cook the bacon and veggies. Preheat a large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add in the diced bacon and cook until rendered, but still soft. Drain off all but a tablespoon of the bacon grease. Add the onions, jalapenos, and garlic to the pan and continue cooking until the bacon is crisp and the vegetables are soft.
- Add remaining ingredients. Add the beans, brown sugar, BBQ sauce, soda, vinegar, molasses, mustard, tomato paste, and salt and pepper to the pan. Stir to combine.
- Bake the beans. Transfer the pan to the oven or smoker and bake for 1 hour. The sauce will thicken and reduce during the cooking process.
- Dig in! Serve the baked beans from the warm skillet and enjoy.

can you freeze the beans
You can freeze them. Let them cool to room temperature, then place them in a gallon freezer bag or an airtight container. Then just thaw, and warm over low heat, stirring regularly.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve made this recipe, I get rave reviews on them every time. I accept the applause but give credit to Hey Grill Hey, which is not like me to do that! I make this recipe so often that the canned beans area staple in my pantry! I came on here to print another copy for the people who asked me to make it this weekend.

I have made these beans several times. Every time, some one will say they are the best beans they’ve every had. I’ve never bothered to write the recipe down though because it’s easy just to check the website. I may be wrong but I don’t think the one tablespoon of salt has always been in the recipe. Not knowing for sure though I added about a teaspoon and a half. They were way too salty. Could it be a misprint?
I’m still giving them five stars cuz they are slamming. I just won’t add any salt.

I would think Cannellini or pinto beans would be a great substitute
