Homemade Ranch Seasoning

Skip the store-bought packets and unlock the secret to ranch flavor with this Homemade Ranch Seasoning. This blend combines savory herbs and spices, and just a touch of heat, creating that unmistakable ranch flavor everyone loves (on everything). What makes this recipe a keeper is its versatility. Mix it with buttermilk and mayo for a dressing better than any restaurant, or sprinkle it directly on grilled meats for an instant flavor boost. You can even use it to amp up your grilled vegetables. Once you see how quick and easy it is to make your own ranch seasoning, you’ll never go back to the packets again.

Ingredients for this Recipe

You may find it hard to believe, but this seasoning gets its explosion of zesty, ranch flavor from just nine common ingredients. You likely have most of the herbs and spices needed for this rich blend, so putting it together is a cinch. Here’s what you need to make it, and a little about what each ingredient brings to the table:

  • Coarse Kosher salt is at the heart of all great seasonings. It enhances the other ingredient flavors, and the flavor of anything you put it on.
  • Fresh ground black pepper adds just a little bite and warmth, which I personally think makes ranch so addictive.
  • Onion powder brings a little sweetness, as well as a depth of savory flavor.
  • Garlic powder works alongside your onion powder for that rich, savory punch ranch seasoning is known for.
  • Dried parsley contributes some much needed light, herby notes, as well as a pop of color to brighten up your seasoning.
  • Dried dill is where your seasoning gets that distinctive, “ranch” taste. When you want that bold, zesty, unmistakably ranch flavor, reach for the dill.
  • Ground mustard gives your seasoning a subtle tanginess, with just a little sharpness to round things out.
  • Whole celery seeds may seem small but they pack big flavor. These seeds add earthy notes and a slight bitterness for amazing depth of flavor.
  • Crushed red pepper flakes kiss your seasoning with just enough heat to be memorable, while adding some gorgeous red speckling.

How to Make Ranch Seasoning

If you thought the ingredient list was easy, wait until you see how you make this savory seasoning. Just follow these simple steps for a ranch blend your dressing and dip devourers will thank you for:

  1. Make seasoning. First, grab a small mixing bowl and add all your seasonings. The key to a perfect blend is evenly mixing everything. Use a whisk or fork to stir, so you break up any clumps. Keep mixing until you have an even, red-and-green speckled blend of herbs and spices.
  2. Use or store. Your ranch seasoning is ready to use right away, so you sprinkle that zesty goodness on whatever you’re cooking. If you’re making it ahead or have some left over, just follow the storage instructions below. This way you have some fresh the next time that ranch craving strikes.

Ways to Use Ranch Seasoning

This ranch seasoning is incredibly versatile, and I love finding new ways to use it. For the classic ranch dressing everyone loves, mix 3-4 Tablespoons of your blend in place of the store-bought packet. I’ve also got a recipe for ranch dressing from scratch if you want to go deeper than the seasoning.

Don’t stop at dressing, though, because this blend tastes amazing sprinkled on grilled chicken, roasted potatoes, or any vegetables that need a flavor boost. Try it as a popcorn seasoning for movie night, or use it as a dry rub on wings before they hit the grill. I recommend starting with 1-2 teaspoons per pound of meat or vegetables, then adjusting to taste. I tend to season heavy at home, but the beauty of having your own seasoning is deciding how much you want.

Storage and Shelf Life

The worst part about ranch dressing is running out (it may be the only bad thing). Luckily for you, your ranch seasoning stores easily, so you can whip up a little dressing or dip whenever you like. If you want to make your seasoning ahead to have on hand (or you have any left), place it in a glass spice jar or other airtight container. This ranch blend will remain fresh and ready to use for up to 6 months when stored this way in your panty or spice rack. After that, you may want to throw a new batch together so your seasoning retains that bold ranch bite.
