Smoky Homemade Seasoning Salt

When you grill as much as me, you learn that seasoning can make or break your food. A good rub can transform a cut of meat, and even a simple finishing sprinkle can push the flavor of a dish over the top. This Homemade Seasoning Salt is one of my favorite ways to enhance the taste of my food while adding depth of flavor. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it turns plain salt into a powerhouse blend you’ll want within arm’s reach when firing up your grill.

What is seasoning salt?

Seasoning salt is exactly what it sounds like: regular salt amped up with flavorful herbs and spices. If you’ve ever used Lawry’s Seasoned Salt, you’re familiar with how it works. My homemade version takes the same idea but keeps things simple with everyday ingredients. It adds smoky, savory depth to your food while still doing the job of regular salt by making your food taste like the best version of itself.

The beauty of seasoned salt is its versatility. You can sprinkle it on just about anything before, during, or after cooking. It’s like having a flavor shortcut right in your spice cabinet.

Ingredients for Homemade Seasoning Salt

This blend comes together with just seven simple ingredients you probably already have in your pantry. Here’s what you’ll need so you can make your own:

  • 2 teaspoons fine salt (or table salt)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon celery salt (ground)

This is a starting point, but the best part of making your own seasonings is the customization. If you like more bite, add extra black pepper. You can bump up the sugar if you like more sweetness. Not into smokiness? Swap in regular paprika. You’re the blend boss, so tweak it to fit your preferences.

How to Make Seasoning Salt

Making this seasoning salt is super easy and only takes a few minutes to turn ordinary pantry staples into flavor magic. Follow these simple steps, and you’ll have a smoky, savory blend ready to sprinkle on anything:

  1. Make the seasoning salt. Combine the salt, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, smoked paprika, sugar, and celery salt in a small bowl. Use a whisk or fork to mix until you have a smooth, even blend with no clumps hiding anywhere.
  2. Put it to work or save it for later. Use your seasoning salt right away on whatever you’re cooking, or transfer it to a spice jar with a tight lid for later. Store it somewhere dry so it’s ready whenever you need it.

Ways to Use Your Blend

This blend is versatile enough to use on just about anything that hits your grill. Sprinkle it on steaks before searing, dust it over chicken wings, or season your burgers right before they hit the grates. It also works great on grilled veggies, potatoes, eggs, and even popcorn. Think of it as your go-to finishing salt for whenever food needs a little more punch.

Storage and Shelf Life

Store your seasoned salt in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. I love these glass spice jars, or you can use any container with a tight-fitting lid. The flavors will stay vibrant for about 6 months. Just give it a taste, and if the flavors have faded, it’s time to whip up a fresh batch. The good news is this recipe is so quick and easy, making a new batch is no big deal.

Susie’s Seasoning Salt Pro Tips

I’ve been mixing my own seasoning blends for years, and I’ve learned some tricks along the way. Here are some pro tips to help you nail the perfect seasoning salt every time:

  • Mix it well. When you want a smooth, even blend, a whisk is your best friend. Breaking up the clumps means every sprinkle gives balanced flavor to your food.
  • Taste and tweak as you go. Try a pinch on its own, then decide if you want more heat, more smoke, or a little extra sweetness. After all, half the fun of homemade blends is fine-tuning for something you love.
  • Double up. This stuff goes fast once you start using it, so I recommend making a double (or quadruple) batch. You’ll be glad you did when you want to add a little something extra to finish off your grilled masterpiece in style.
