Creamy Horseradish Sauce

A dab of creamy horseradish sauce on a mouth-watering bite of prime rib is a holiday staple at our house. This zesty condiment is a great way to add some smooth and tangy heat to the mild flavor of thick cuts of meat, and punch up your French dip sandwiches before dunking them in some of my Homemade Au Jus. If you’re as big of a prime rib fan as me, then having a go-to horseradish sauce is a must.

With my Creamy Horseradish Sauce recipe, I’ll provide you with everything you need to make this smooth and sassy sauce for your next big holiday gathering. I’ll cover everything you need to make this tangy sauce, including which horseradish to use. I’ll share some amazing prime rib recipes to pair it with, give you some storage tips, and a whole lot more. Saddle up, it’s time to make some horseradish sauce.

Prepared, Creamy, and Horseradish Root

When it comes to making horseradish sauce, knowing what type of horseradish to use can be confusing. Not only can you get fresh horseradish root, but there are also 2 different types in jars at the grocery store. But don’t worry, I’ll help you understand the differences and benefits, and which is best for this recipe.

  • Prepared horseradish. You can find prepared horseradish in the condiment section of your grocery store. It’s going to come in a little glass jar. This is what I recommend using for this recipe. It’s still got a lot of the texture and punch you lose with creamy horseradish, but it’s more accessible than horseradish root. While preservatives mellow it a little, it still has some heat. That’s where my Zesty Alabama White Sauce gets its kick.
  • Creamy horseradish. You can find creamy horseradish on the shelf right next to the prepared horseradish. The main difference between the two is that creamy horseradish has other things like mayo added to it so it’s creamy. This is going to be similar to the sauce packets you get at roast beef chains. It’s a great option if you don’t have time to make your own. But honestly, it’s just a few seconds. You won’t regret making your own.
  • Horseradish root. This is the actual horseradish root straight from the grocery store. These things are enormous, and they pack way more of a punch than anything you’ll find in jars. My brother grows his own horseradish plant and then grates the root for fresh sauce at our Christmas dinner every December. And let me tell you, it is powerful stuff. If you’re going to work with fresh horseradish root, then keep in mind the flavors are a lot stronger. You’ve been warned.

Ingredients for Horseradish Cream Sauce

Making your own horseradish at home is super easy, and you get to know every ingredient going into your food. Other than the horseradish itself, you likely have most of these ingredients on hand already. Here’s everything you need to make this awesome condiment:

  • 2 Tablespoons grated horseradish
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 Tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 Tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

How to Make Creamy Horseradish Sauce

When the tangy punch of this smooth horseradish hits your tastebuds, you won’t believe it only takes a minute to make, but it’s true. Once you have all your ingredients together, all you need is a bowl and whisk, and you’re ready to go.

  1. Combine. If you’re using fresh horseradish root, then grate that into a large bowl. If you’re using a prepared horseradish like I am for this recipe, then you’re ready to go. In your large bowl, add in your grated horseradish, sour cream, mayonnaise, heavy cream, dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Using a whisk, stir everything together for 1-2 minutes, or until your horseradish sauce has a smooth creaminess and even consistency.
  2. Enjoy. Yeah, that’s really all there is to it. Grab some savory, slow-smoked prime rib to dip in this creamy condiment, enjoy at the symphony of flavors, and try not to get too emotional when you read the thank-you card you receive from your tastebuds.

Storing Tips

You can estimate this easy horseradish sauce will stay fresh up to a week in your refrigerator, which is great because there’s almost always leftover prime rib. Simply place any remaining homemade horseradish sauce into an airtight container or hinged mason jar and then store it in your fridge. It will remain tangy and ready to spice up your French dip sandwiches and leftover prime rib roasts alike for up to 7 days.

Ingredients
 

  • 2 Tablespoons grated horseradish prepared, jarred
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 Tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 Tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 Tablespoon dijon mustard

Instructions

    In top section of this recipe it calls for 2 TBS of mayo and heavy cream but on card says 3 TBS of each. Regardless whipped it up and I must be a horseradish fanatic cause I tripled the horseradish to give it enough flavor for our tastes.

    The recipe is great. Very smooth with just the right amount from the horse radish. I had it on my beef brisket sandwich and it was very good. I would recommend it to those who would like to kick up their beef another notch.
