This Chipotle Seasoning is a nice, spicy seasoning that tastes great on steak, chicken, and so much more! Sweet from the brown sugar, and spicy from the chili powder and ground chipotle peppers, this is a great rub to have on hand when you want to branch out from the same old thing.

What is Chipotle Seasoning?

The way that this chipotle seasoning stands out from the rest comes from one key ingredient: ground chipotle peppers. Chipotle peppers are smoke-dried jalapeno peppers that are often used in Mexican and Mexican-inspired recipes.

By mixing the ground chipotle peppers with other spices (and a bit of brown sugar for some much-needed sweetness), you now have a perfectly balanced, spicy rub.

So the next question becomes, where do I get ground chipotle peppers? There are a few options available if you’re looking to make this recipe. First, you can purchase dried chipotle peppers and grind the peppers yourself. This takes a little extra work, but it’ll work just great. Second, many stores sell chipotle pepper powder or ground chipotle chile seasoning. This is what I used in this recipe, and it’s already prepared and easy to measure.

Oh, and sorry, no substitutes for this chipotle powder. If you can’t find these in your local grocery store, online retailers are also a good option.

Chipotle Seasoning

This chipotle seasoning is great on meat, but you can use it in just about any recipe that calls for a nice, spicy seasoning. Chicken, seafood, veggies, and more would taste amazing with a hefty sprinkle of this seasoning.

This seasoning can also be adjusted for more or less heat. Half the chili powder and omit the ground cayenne pepper if you’re wanting something milder. If you really want this seasoning to pack a punch, add in the cayenne pepper (and increase as desired). You can expect this rub to pack a good punch now.

This chipotle seasoning is quick and easy to make – simply mix all the ingredients in a bowl. I like to have a fork on hand to break up any clumps in the seasoning. Once everything is mixed, you’re ready to use immediately or store for later use. I like to stock up on these glass spice bottles so I can keep all my homemade seasonings and spices organized.

  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Ground Chipotle Chiles (or Chipotle Pepper Powder)
  • Ground Cayenne Pepper (optional for added heat)

Chipotle Seasoning for Steak

This chipotle seasoning tastes amazing on steak. I particularly enjoy it on Skirt Steak. In fact, my recipe for skirt steak on this site uses this exact chipotle seasoning. Due to its thickness and size, this meat takes on marinades and dry rub well.

Oh, and this chipotle seasoning tastes AMAZING in carne asada, adding in a perfect blend of spices and heat. You can also try this seasoning on other cuts of steak as well; it’ll add a nice flavor and bit of heat to any steak. And it doesn’t end there! This chipotle seasoning tastes amazing in just about any Mexican-style recipe you have.
