Honey Mustard Chicken
Of all of the flavor combinations in all the land, honey mustard might be one of the best. It has that perfect balance of tangy/sweet that keeps you coming back for more.
Arguably, the best way to take advantage of those fantastic flavors is with a juicy chicken breast cooked on the grill. You get all of the crunchy crispy edges on the outside from the caramelized honey, with tender and moist chicken on the inside from the acidity in the mustard.
Honey Mustard Chicken Marinade
The secret to this honey mustard chicken is in the marinade. This marinade infuses the chicken with flavor and can be made in two different ways.
For quick and easy honey mustard chicken marinade combine the following:
- 1 1/2 cups Zesty Gold BBQ Sauce
- 1/2 cup honey
Zesty Gold BBQ Sauce can be purchased from the Hey Grill Hey Store. It’s the perfect tangy mustard sauce that tastes great in a marinade, drizzled on top of chicken or ham, or even used as a dipping sauce for fries or nuggets.
If you don’t have any Zesty Gold BBQ Sauce on hand, you can make your own honey mustard from scratch with the following:
- 1 cup yellow mustard
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 Tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
How to Make Grilled Honey Mustard Chicken
Once you have your marinade ready to go, you’re ready to get this chicken going. Here’s how to make grilled honey mustard chicken.
- Marinate. Place the ingredients for the honey mustard chicken in a gallon-sized zip-top bag and add the chicken. Marinate for 4-8 hours.
- Preheat. Fire up your grill and preheat it to 350-400 degrees F (any grill you have on your patio will work for this recipe as long as you can have a direct heat side and an indirect heat side).
- Grill. Remove the chicken from the marinade and place it on the indirect heat side of the grill. Cook for 6-7 minutes on each side (12-14 minutes total).
- Sear. Place the chicken over the direct heat side of the grill and cook for 2-3 minutes per side or until the chicken reaches 160 degrees F.
- Rest and enjoy. Once the chicken reaches 160 degrees F, remove it to a serving platter and tent it with aluminum foil. Rest for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
Tips for Making Honey Mustard Chicken
Here are some tips for making this honey mustard chicken the best around.
- Go the easy route! The recipe card includes instructions for making a homemade honey mustard marinade, but to save on time, you can cheat (I won’t tell) and use my Zesty Gold BBQ Sauce with an extra hit of honey.
- Use two-zone cooking. This means having high and low heat zones on your grill. Cooking with two heat zones is super important when you’ve got anything that has sugar in the seasoning or marinade. You want the right amount of char from the high temp side and the low and slow cooking to finish the process without burning the exterior.
- Add extra flavor. Set aside some of the marinade before adding your chicken. After you mix up your marinade, set aside a bit for basting at the end of the cooking process for extra flavor.

Ingredients
- 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 1 ½ cups Zesty Gold BBQ Sauce
- ½ cup honey
Homemade Honey Mustard Sauce
- 1 cup yellow mustard
- ½ cup honey
- ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 Tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 Tablespoon Worchestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon hot sauce optional
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Marinate the chicken. Combine the Zesty Gold sauce and honey OR all the individual ingredients for the homemade sauce in a mixing bowl. Whisk until everything is thoroughly combined. Pour the marinade over the chicken breasts in a gallon zip-top bag and press out any excess air. Massage to ensure all the chicken is coated. Refrigerate for 4-8 hours.
- Preheat your grill. Set up your grill for two-zone cooking (meaning one hot, direct side and one cool, indirect side), with the overall temperature sitting around 350-400 degrees F.
- Cook the chicken. Remove the chicken from the marinade and place it on the indirect heat side of your grill, close the lid, and cook for 6-7 minutes. Flip the chicken and cook for an additional 6-7 minutes.
- Sear the chicken. Move the chicken breasts over to the direct heat side of the grill and sear for 2-3 minutes per side (with the lid up), or until the internal temperature of your breasts reads 160 degrees F.
- Rest the chicken. Place the chicken on your platter and tent with foil. This process will finish the cooking process and keep your chicken juicy.
- Enjoy. Serve hot for dinner and use the leftovers for delicious sandwiches, wraps, or salads.
