Everything Bagel Seasoning

This homemade Everything Bagel Seasoning brings bold, savory flavors right to your backyard or kitchen. The best part is you make it with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry. A combination of sesame and poppy seeds, dried garlic and onion, and flaky Kosher salt get a twist of black pepper. While it might have bagel in the name, this versatile blend adds a delicious punch and satisfying texture to just about everything. It works on anything from smoked salmon to grilled veggies. When you want to turn your meal prepping or weekend brunch into something special, this Everything Bagel Seasoning delivers.

Ingredients for this Recipe

This Everything Bagel Seasoning uses just six simple ingredients, but each one packs a critical punch of flavor. Here’s what you need:

  • Kosher salt: I put a little salt in just about everything I make. When it comes to creating seasoning blends, Kosher salt is my go-to. The large flakes enhance the flavor of everything they touch and lay the base for the crunchy texture of this blend.
  • Dried minced garlic: Those unmistakable savory notes everything bagels are famous for have garlic to thank. This ingredient adds a rich depth of flavor to the mix, and smells intoxicating when you cook with it.
  • Dried minced onion: Get all the sweet, oniony goodness you crave without the tears with this simple ingredient. The dried onion has a crisp bite, so it adds to the overall crunchy texture of your seasoning. If you prefer, you can use freeze-dried onions. You’ll just lose some of that awesome texture.
  • Poppy seeds: These little black seeds might not seem like much, but they bring a nutty, earthy flavor to round out your blend. And when it comes to that coarse texture you’re after, these guys do a lot of heavy lifting.
  • Sesame seeds: These flavorful seeds add subtle, toasty notes, and (you guessed it), really help to enhance the texture of your seasoning. If you want to really get in your seasoning bag, you can use white sesame seeds and black sesame seeds. You can also use the standard, pre-blended kind. That’s what I used, and it works great.
  • Coarse ground black pepper: Now, black pepper isn’t a traditional ingredient, so you won’t find it in some recipes. You can omit it if you like, but it adds a touch of heat and warmth I love in this blend.

How to Make Everything Bagel Seasoning

The name may sound intimidating, but this Everything Bagel Seasoning couldn’t be easier to create at home. Once you’ve got your ingredients gathered, just follow these simple steps for a savory seasoning in minutes:

  1. Make everything bagel seasoning. Add each ingredient into a small bowl, then stir to combine everything. The key to a successful seasoning is a nice, even blend. To ensure each bite gets a little of everything, use a fork or whisk to break up any clumps.
  2. Use or store. Your seasoning is ready to use immediately, so you can whip it up when you’re ready to make some bagels or fire up the smoker. Any unused seasoning will last up to 6 months stored in your pantry.

Ways to Use Everything Bagel Seasoning

Once again, don’t let the name fool you. It’s called Everything Bagel Seasoning. Some may say that means it’s for bagels. Personally, I think it’s great on everything. Around here, we love sprinkling a little of this stuff on top whenever we make sliders (like these smoky turkey sliders). I’ve even got a salmon appetizer featuring this seasoning, and makes an excellent bagel alternative. And yes, it’s still totally delicious on bagels with a little cream cheese and smoked salmon. It does so much more, though, so don’t be afraid to think outside the bagel.

Storage and Shelf Life

If you want to make your Everything Bagel Seasoning ahead of time to have ready, or you have some left to store, that’s no problem. You can keep your seasoning in an airtight container or glass spice jar to keep it in your pantry or spice rack. It will remain maintain the most freshness and flavor for up to 6 months. If you still have any left at that point, it may be time for a fresh batch.
