This cherry berry dutch oven cobbler definitely needs to go on your menu for summer cookouts this year. This recipe is absolutely perfect for baking in your pellet grill or even cooking in the coals of your campfire!

Dutch Oven Cobbler

There’s just something about finishing off a meal with a warm and delicious dutch oven cobbler that can’t be beat. This recipe is an all-purpose BBQ dessert recipe that is great for all grills, smokers, and occasions. I love that this is a super simple recipe because it is easy to make as gourmet or laid back as you like!

The whole thing starts with a frozen cherry berry blend of cherries, blackberries, and blueberries on the bottom. The berries are mixed with sugar and some bright lemon zest before being topped with a fizzy soda yellow cake studded with salted butter. This cobbler is the perfect blend of tart and sweet.

Berry Cobbler in Dutch Oven or Skillet

Once you have everything ready to go, you can choose your own cooking adventure for the cobbler! The magic really happens as this bakes in cast iron.

  • Dutch oven in charcoal. If you’re baking in a fire, I recommend using a 4-quart Dutch oven with the lid so you can place hot coals above and below for even heat distribution (I would do 10-15 coals on the bottom and about the same amount on the lid, you may need to increase the baking time slightly to allow the Dutch oven to come up to temperature.)
  • Cast-iron skillet in a grill or smoker.  If you’re baking on a grill, you can use a 12-inch cast iron skillet and no lid with the grill set to 375 degrees F.

For this recipe (and pictures) I baked it at home and went the skillet route, but both methods work great.

Ingredients for Cherry Berry Cobbler

This cherry berry Dutch oven cobbler is fast and easy to make with only 9 ingredients! Here’s what you’ll need to assemble prior to making this cobbler.

  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 1 12-ounce can lemon lime soda
  • 8 Tablespoons salted butter
  • 2 cups frozen cherries, blueberries, and blackberries
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • zest and juice of 1 lemon

How to Make Cobbler in a Dutch Oven

Here’s how to make cobbler in a Dutch oven (or cast-iron skillet):

  1. Add the berries. Place the frozen berries, brown sugar, flour, and lemon zest in a cast-iron skillet or Dutch oven. Stir to coat the berries evenly.
  2. Layer on the cake. Make the cake layer by combining the cake mix, lemon lime soda, and lemon juice in a medium bowl. Stir until it is just barely combined (do not overmix). Fold in the butter and pour the cake mixture over the berry layer.
  3. Cook. With your grill or smoker preheated to 375 degrees F, bake the cherry berry cobbler for 30-45 minutes. This time may vary depending on where you are cooking the cobbler, so use this time as a guide and remove when a toothpick comes out nice and clean and the cake has started to brown.
  4. Serve. Remove the cobbler from the smoker or coals. Cool slightly (those berries will be hot!), then serve with a large scoop of ice cream!

Variations for Dutch Oven Cobbler

Here are some ways to switch things up when making this cherry berry Dutch oven cobbler. 

  • Swap the fruit. You can make this with any combination of the frozen fruit recommended, or get creative and use frozen peaches, strawberries, or even raspberries.
  • Take this recipe camping!  This Dutch oven cobbler tastes even better in the great outdoors. If you’re going camping and don’t want to stress about packing frozen fruit, you can swap that out for a can of cherry pie filling and a can of blueberry pie filling.
  • Make the cake from scratch. If you are feeling fancy and don’t want to use a store-bought cake mix, you can whip up your own yellow cake (I recommend homemade yellow cake mix from I Am Baker).  However you decide to make it, just be sure to top off the warm cobbler with some vanilla ice cream or whipped cream!

Ingredients
 

  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 1 12-oz can lemon lime soda
  • 8 Tablespoons salted butter cut into 1/2 inch cubes
  • 2 cups frozen mix of cherries, blueberries, and blackberries
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • zest and juice of 1 lemon

Instructions
 

  • Preheat. Preheat your grill or smoker to 375 degrees F. You can also cook this in your campfire using hot coals.
  • Add the fruit. In the bottom of a well-seasoned cast-iron skillet or Dutch oven, combine the frozen fruit, brown sugar, flour, and lemon zest. Stir to coat.
  • Make the cake layer. In a medium mixing bowl, stir together the cake mix, lemon lime soda, and lemon juice until just barely combined. Fold in the cubed butter and pour the mixture over the berries, covering them completely.
  • Cook. Place the skillet on the grill or the Dutch oven in the coals with a lid on and bake the cobbler for 30-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Enjoy! Remove the cobbler from the heat. Allow to cool slightly before serving warm with whipped cream or ice cream.

    Just make this. “OUTSTANDING”.
    I might suggest that you add equal amounts of sugar & cinnamon, mix, and sprinkle over the top before baking. Apparently 4 teaspoons.
    Gives the cobbler a lite crust and adds to the goodness.
